THE WELL-STYLEDÂ HOME
CHECKLIST
You're going to love this!
You've unlocked The Well-Styled Home Checklist! đ And thank you for subscribing to Ladies League!
The thing about a beautiful home is, it's less about money or square footage and more about knowing what to look for. Once you have that eye, you'll walk into any room and just know. And that's exactly what this guide teaches you.
Below you'll find checklists and tips for your living room, bedroom, and kitchen. Simple, practical, and genuinely useful.

Three Principles Behind a Well-Styled Room
Â
01 LAYERS
Great rooms have depth. They mix textures, heights, and materials so the eye always has somewhere interesting to land on.
Â
02 NEGATIVE SPACE
Editing "stuff" out is just as important as what you put in. A room that has some breathing room always feels more elevated than a cluttered room.
Â
03Â THOUGHTFUL DETAILS
Everything in your room should earn the right to be there. Meaning, if you can't say why something is there or it doesn't have a cool story behind it, it probably shouldn't be.
No. 1 - THE LIVING ROOM
Your most-seen space. We gotta make this space count.
The living room is the heart of your home. When it feels good, the whole house feels good.
Â
Furniture & Layout
â Sofa is sized correctly for the room (roughly 2/3 the width of your main wall)
â Furniture is arranged for conversation (pieces face each other)
â Rug anchors the seating area (front legs of all furniture on the rug, or all legs on the rug)
â Coffee table is proportional to the sofa (roughly 2/3 the length of your sofa, 1-2 inches lower than seat height)
â Traffic can flow easily (at least 30-36 inches of walking space between pieces)
â There is a clear focal point (fireplace, artwork, window, or a TV. The room needs something to organize around)
Â
Lighting
â Room has at least 3 light sources (We never have just the overhead light source)
â Lamps are at eye level when seated (lampshade bottom should be roughly at shoulder height)
â Warm bulbs in your lamps. 2700-3000K (cool white bulbs kill cozy vibes)
â Dimmer on overhead light (the single highest-impact, lowest-cost room upgrade)
â At least one candle or ambient light source (a fireplace is bonus points)
Â
Styling & Accessories
â Go light on the throw pillows or skip them altogether
â If you do have throw pillows, upholstered them in the same fabric as your sofa or chair
â Coffee table is styled in layers (stack books, add a tray, include something tall and something organic)
â Wall art is hung at eye level (center at 57-60 inches from the floor. Most folks hang art too high)
â At least one natural element (ex: branches, stone, wood, or linen)
â Color palette has no more than 3-4 colors (including neutrals. More than this feels chaotic)
â There is a personal touch (something that tells your story! A vintage find or a meaningful object)
Â
No. 2 - THE BEDROOM
Your bedroom is your retreat from the world. It should feel calm, cozy, and beautiful.
Â
The Bed
â Bed is sized correctly for your room (a king that leaves no perimeter walking space is a no-no)
â Headboard or intentional wall treatment behind bed (a bare wall behind a bed is a missed opportunity and majorly lacks the cozy factor)
â Bedding is in a cohesive palette (2-3 colors maximum. Your bed is the room's focal point.)
â Layers of texture on the bed (sheet, duvet, and a couple large European sized pillows)
â Euro shams or large pillows give the bed height and hotel vibes
â Nightstands feel tidy (matching is great. If you're going to go mismatched be sure they are the same scale and material or finish)
Â
Lighting & Atmosphere
â Overhead light is on a dimmer or just always turned off (bedrooms rarely need bright overhead light)
â Bedside lamps or sconces on both sides (symmetry here is almost always the right call)
â Curtains hung high and wide (rod 4-6 inches above frame, panels extend 6-12 inches beyond frame each side)
â Warm, soft bulbs again! 2700K or lower (this room should feel like candlelight)
Â
Clutter & Calm
â Nightstand holds only the essentials (lamp, one book, one small object or picture)
â All cords are hidden (nothing breaks the calm like a bunch of tangled cords)
â Dresser top is styled but minimal. Not piled with stuff.
â Closet door stays closed (what's behind that door is a project for another day!)
â Scent if that's your thing (a candle, diffuser, or linen spray. IMO smell is one of the most underrated elements of design. I keep linen spray on my bedside table.)
Â
Hannah's Tip: The fastest bedroom upgrade is better bedding. White duvet covers feel luxurious, photograph beautifully, and go with everything. If your bedding has a lot of patterns going on, scale it back. Â
AI Prompt to Try:Â
"I want my bedroom to feel like a boutique hotel suite. Here is what I currently have: [list every piece. Your bed size, headboard, nightstands, dresser, rug, curtains, wall color, light fixtures]. My budget for changes is [amount]. I don't want to do anything structural or paint.
Give me three specific things to remove immediately, three specific things to add or swap, and tell me exactly what bedding, pillow combination, and throw would make this room look finished and expensive. Include specific product descriptions or search terms I can use to find each item."
No. 3 - THE KITCHEN
Â
Counters & Surfaces
â Counters hold only daily-use items (if you don't use it every day, it doesn't belong on the counter)
â Appliances are grouped or tucked away (a toaster next to an air fryer next to a blender is pure chaos)
â One styled moment on the counter (a leaned and pretty cutting board or a beautiful bowl of fruit)
â Dish soap and sponge are in a tray or under the sink!Â
â Freestanding paper towel holders are rarely beautiful. We ditched paper towels for linen wash-able towels a decade ago and have never looked back.
Â
Open Shelving & Display
â Displayed dishes are cohesive in color or material (mixed, mismatched dishes can totally work on a tablescape but on open shelves they usually read as cluttered)
â Glassware is grouped by type (all wine glasses together, all tumblers together. Grouping creates order.)
â Open shelves need to have breathing room (they should not be packed. Leave space for the eye to rest.)
Â
Elevated Details
â Hand towels are fresh and clean and beautiful
â There is at least one living thing (a potted herb or fresh flowers in a simple vase)
â Hardware is consistent throughout the room
â Backsplash area is clear of clutter
â There is a moment of warmth (a candle, a wooden bowl, or a piece of art. I adore art in the kitchen.)
Â
Hannah's Tip: Remove half of what's on your counters and put it away for one week. You'll be shocked how much you don't miss it and how much cleaner the space feels immediately.
AI Prompt to Try:Â
"My kitchen has [cabinet color], [countertop material], and [flooring]. What hardware finish, paint color, and 3 decor additions would make it feel more elevated without a renovation?"
Â
You made it! đ
 Â
If you're all the way down here, that means one of two things: you just walked through every room in your house with fresh eyes (amazing!) or you scrolled straight to the bottom. Either way, I'm so glad you made it this far.
And here's what I want you to remember: a well-styled home isn't all about spending more money. It's about attention to detail, balance, and personalization and now you have the checklist to help you do exactly that.Â
Ready to go even deeper?
I've talked about this over on Ladies League quite a bit but if there's one thing that can make or break a room, it's lighting. And I am especially passionate about cool vintage lighting. You could call me a collector. I'm extremely experienced in purchasing a beautiful vintage lamp that comes with a harp and no shade. That's exactly why I built Shadefinder an tool that helps you determine the perfect size and style lampshade for your vintage lamp.
